Australian born Annette Kellerman appeared at the Orpheum on this day 100 years ago.

Kellerman was a world-renowned aquatic ballet-swimmer and was sometimes billed as “The Australian Mermaid”.

1. She was one of the first women to wear a one piece bathing costume instead of the then accepted Pantaloons. Others followed suit so to speak.
2. In 1907, at the height of her popularity, Kellermann was arrested on Revere Beach, Massachusetts, for indecency – she was wearing one of her fitted one-piece costumes
3. She started her own fashion-line of one-piece bathing suits.
4. She popularized the sport of synchronized swimming.
5. She was a life-long vegetarian who started her own health-food store in California
6. She was the first woman to appear completely nude on film, in a film called “A “Daughter of the Gods”
7. She wrote several books on how to swim and on health and beauty practices.
8. She was portrayed by Esther Williams in the film Million Dollar Mermaid (1952), and Kellermann’s name is on a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, on Hollywood Boulevard.
9. An award-winning Australian documentary called The Original Mermaid, which was about Kellermann, was produced in 2002.
10. She appeared on the vaudeville stages as a headliner where she swam in a huge glass tank on stage.
